I just learned that this exists, and I have a chance to buy one for $1500. It’ s in good condition with a clean title, but the low price has me thinking it’s a horrible mistake or something. So... what should I know before I go look at it?

It’s one of the later NSU cars, which means finding parts is going to be difficult if anything is missing or breaks.

it’s a neat part of automotive history, but you’d have to be insane to drive one today. it’s a little tinfoil box which would shred you if anything hit you.

Wankel? Then the problems are known, and you can research them. It’s wildly unsafe - the brakes are probably crap. On the other hand, you can probably do most repairs with basic tools. Parts? Maybe replacing with parts from cars they still sell parts for?

The cost of parts is probably the biggest issue; they’re available, and my understanding is that the cars are easy to work on, but you’ll have to ship them from Europe or from a specialist. That price doesn’t sound too far out of line for what I’ve seen in the past; it’s low, but not too low.

Considering it was probably worth about $850 new, it sounds spendy to me.

I had one as a kid. A TTS . It was my fathers-and it rotted out. The whole floorboard seam sepa rated from the body. He was gonna scrap it. “ I can make it go away!” We towed it up to a buddies house that had plenty of fields around him. We fixed it as good as a couple of 15 year olds could-got much use out of it racing thru the fields. I remember tall grass would plug up the fan vents (air cooled) so we rigged up some ductwork to a roof mounted scoop.
Anywhoo-get it. Its spunky because the car weighs nothing.

Parts availability is not as bad as people make it out to be, at least in Europe. Engine cooling is another problem but that can be fixed. Other than that the NSU is a neat little car.
